URGENCY CINEMA: METHODS, DILEMMAS, INTERVENTIONS

Debate

Date: 08-25 | Friday
Time: 10:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Spots:

Brazil is facing one of the most intense political crisis in its history, one of those moments that reality seems to convene cinema, demanding a record and a reflection upon such events. The idea of this debate is to establish a conversation with (and between) filmmakers who responded to this convocation and are making films about this political crisis, with distinct focuses and purposes – all still in process of being made. When exactly did they feel the need to make their films? Did they start from a primary method or they followed their impulse, only thinking about an organized structure later? What has changed throughout the way? What was prioritized, what was abandoned? Whatpractical dilemmas did they face? How the shooting progressed and how is the editing process going?

Guests:

Douglas Duarte - filmmaker | RJ
Francis Vogner do Reis - Mostra CineBH curator  | SP
Miguel Antunes Ramos – filmmaker | SP
Paula Kimo - Mostra CineBH - Mostra A Cidade em Movimento curator  | MG

Moderator: Pedro Butcher –  Mostra CineBH curator and Brasil CineMundi collaborator | RJ

DOCUMENTARY: POINT OF CONVERGENCE BETWEEN DESIRE AND NECESSITY

Workshop

Date: 08-25 | Friday
Time: 02:00 PM - 03:30 PM
Spots:

Many years ago I had the luck of being around a great man of the Canadian documentary film: Michel Brault. He made films, but he was a great cinematographer and is the responsible for the famous long take in Jean Rouch’s film, Chronicle of a Summer, where Marceline Loridan walks and tells about her deportation and return from a concentration camp after the World War II. During the shooting of the film, she meets Joris Ivens, whom she would live with and make the films we know now.

By the end of the analysis of a film during its editing stage, Michel Brault asks the director, “Why did you make this film?”

Making a documentary requires the director to ask themself this question everyday... and he should always not just answer this question with conviction but also defend it in front of others, in order to transform what started from a strong personal desire into a necessity for the interlocutor, partner, producer, patron and the commissioning editor whom the director (and/or producer) will have in front of them.

How to transform an observed fact and story into a singular and convincing view? What film do I wish to make? How do I want to make it? Why a certain film should only be made by me? When? In what stage am I at for making my wish come true? What do I need today? And after that?

From my experience as a commissioning editor for television but also as a documentary programmer and consultant of projects that are in development, I will also try to answer the questions and expectation that will lead to understand better how would this eventual “perfect marriage” work in the case of France.

Guest: Anna Glogowski - independet consultant | FRANCE

Moderator: Gudula Meinzolt – Brasil CineMundi colaborator, Head of the Doc Outlook International Market at the Visions du Réel and Autentika Films producer | SWITZERLAND
